ABOUT US

SuperMath is an abacus-based mental calculation school. In 1979, Mina Watanabe began teaching two students in Salinas, CA. Currently, there are over 200 students enrolled in our San Francisco, San Mateo, and San Jose classrooms.

What is the abacus?

The abacus is an ancient tool made of beads to assist in making calculations. Historians trace its origins back to Babylon, 3000 BCE.

What is abacus-based mental calculation?

Once students understand how to use the abacus, they begin to learn how to visualize the beads in their heads. This process uses both left and right hemispheres of the brain. It is not memorization-based. Rather, it is skill-based and lays a solid foundation for numbers.

How is SuperMath beneficial?

SuperMath believes that abacus-based education brings numbers to life. With practice, mental calculation becomes a lifelong skill. In an engaging and dynamic setting, students also learn and apply life skills such as goal setting, diligence, and focus. SuperMath strives to empower students with confidence and quick processing skills.
